- Dental plaque or bacterial plaque is a layer in which microbes, bacteria and microorganisms accumulate on the surface of the teeth and gums, as well as small remains of food. It is not visible to the naked eye unless it is stained with a yellowish film. After each meal, this dental plaque adheres to the teeth and with the remains of food, but it is eliminated with the correct brushing of the teeth. If it builds up and calcifies, it forms tartar .
